Abrazo XIV

Embrace XIV

1997

Steel

420 x 162 x 109 cm

Created in the Sidenor forge, Reinosa, Cantabria.

This work comprises three steel pieces bolted together. If the observer stands with their back to the country house and runs their gaze along the piece to their right, they will see it open into two arms that twist and wrap around the other two pieces in a delicate yet fierce embrace. Besarkada is in fact Basque for embrace.

Eduardo Chillida’s work is imbued with tolerance, respect and fraternity. He was a man of his time, committed and determined, who used his artistic work to make a strong stand for human rights.
