Up Down III

187 x 98 x 47 cm

Created in Patricio Echeverría’s forge in Legazpi.

The name of this work means “up down”. It is situated in the Zen garden, a space for spiritual contemplation where the artist used to go at dusk. Chillida was a highly spiritual person and many of his sculptures have a connection with the mystical realm. This theme is reflected in his work. In this case, the sculptor suggests a form of play between matter and space. These two elements sit in perfect balance throughout his body of work—a recurring theme—as though they were a set of scales. The weight naturally travels downwards while the spirit rises up. Here, matter and space, or full and empty, sit in perfect harmony. The artist’s aesthetic discourse always initiated a dialogue between matter and space. For this to work, the matter had to be solid and compact, and the empty space had to be visible.
