Monumento a la tolerancia I
“My work titled Monumento a la tolerancia tries to convey how important this virtue is, and my wish for it to manifest in everything I do. Not just me, but all of humanity.”
Eduardo Chillida
The works of Eduardo Chillida are imbued with ethical connotations. This project in particular is a homage to the concept of respect for other ideas and beliefs. The sculpture was created before the public project of the same name: the concrete Monumento a la tolerancia, located in Seville, commissioned by a Jewish association in remembrance of the expulsion of Jews from Spain in 1492. Sited strategically on the banks of the Guadalquivir, it faces away from the place where the headquarters of the Spanish Inquisition once stood. One of its arms reaches within, symbolising shelter and protection. The other extends from the ground towards the sky, connecting the earthly and heavenly planes.
