Summer Solstice - Proximity at Chillida Leku

Chillida Leku hosts Proximity, a landscape opera by Strijbos & Van Rijswijk, specially adapted for the museum to celebrate the summer solstice. The Dutch composers will transform the museum’s fields with immersive sound, offering a unique sensory experience that reimagines the space. Inspired by Eduardo Chillida’s work, the piece will feature Basque sopranos Carolina Luquin and Haizea Muñoz, and French musician David Chalmin. This site-specific performance invites the audience to walk, reflect, and rediscover the landscape in an extraordinary way.

Drone Shore: A proximity sound installation throughout the park featuring words by Eduardo Chillida (source: Susana Chillida), as well as selected poems read by Eñaut Elorrieta, accompanied by original compositions created especially for the summer solstice event.
8:30 PM – 9:15 PM
Signal Landscape: A landscape opera by Strijbos & Van Rijswijk (Netherlands), featuring sopranos Carolina Luquin (Spain), Haizea Muñoz (Spain), Michaela Riener (Austria), and Laura Giavon (Italy).
9:15 PM – 10:00 PM
Le Cercle Invisible: David Chalmin explores the concept of proximity within his speaker circle developed by Strijbos & Van Rijswijk. A spatial experience combining acoustic piano, guitar, voice, and electronics.

The museum's parking lot has limited spaces, so we will provide a shuttle bus service from the Galarreta parking area and the Errekalde bus stop.

Artists
Jeroen Strijbos and Rob van Rijswijk (The Netherlands) have been collaborating for over twenty years, creating sound works that combine technology, musical composition, and environment. Their approach seeks to stimulate the imagination through sound, integrating physical space and context as essential elements of the artistic experience. Their installations and live performances—whether on beaches, glaciers, urban landscapes, or museums—transform the everyday into immersive experiences, playing with the perception between the real and the imagined. With more than 25 years of experience, they have developed a unique language focused on creating innovative and participatory sound art, tailored to specific locations.
David Chalmin (France) is a composer, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and singer known for his innovative contributions to contemporary music. His versatility and broad musical interests have led him to work in various genres, including classical music, rock, and electronic music. His role as a guitarist and singer highlights his talent for blending electronic textures with acoustic elements. His music is renowned for its experimental approach, combining rich and atmospheric sounds with intense and dynamic performances. Collaborative projects often explore the boundaries between different musical styles, creating unique and evocative soundscapes. He has collaborated with a wide range of artists, including Bryce Dessner (The National), French cellist Gaspar Claus, and Norwegian composer Rebekka Karijord.

Floor van Leeuwen is a choreographer who works in public space, currently under the name Swarm. She also teaches workshops and classes in various places, such as the Department of Architecture at ETH. As a director, she supports young creators in their artistic practice.
Laura Giavon (1993) is an Italian singer specializing in jazz, early music, and oral tradition music. She studied in Italy, the Netherlands, and Zimbabwe, and earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. She is the founder of RIVOCS, in collaboration with drummer Marco D'Orlando, a band that explores the liminality between voice and drums. They released their debut album in November 2024. She also founded the female vocal quartet ANUTIS. She collaborates with various musical and theatrical ensembles and conducts two choirs. She lives and works in Rome.
Michaela Riener is an Austrian singer devoted to both early and contemporary music. A graduate of the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, she works with ensembles such as Ratas del Viejo Mundo and Utopia Ensemble, combining historical performance with the exploration of new repertoires and formats. Since 2012, she has also been a member of Silbersee, where she explores musical theatre, improvisation, and interdisciplinary performance. Michaela has performed as a soloist at major European festivals with works by composers such as Andriessen, Reich, Rihm, and Lang.
Carolina Luquin Duarte, born in 2000 in Estella, began her musical studies at the age of twelve, focusing on classical singing and flute. She later specialized as a soprano at Musikene. She has performed as a soloist in operas, zarzuelas, and oratorios, with notable works by Vivaldi, Beethoven, Bach, and Bruckner. She has collaborated with prestigious orchestras and conductors, and made her debut in roles such as Giannetta in L’elisir d’amore and Lucinda in Don Chisciotte. She has won the Opus Lírica competition, was a semifinalist in Juventudes Musicales de España, and received a scholarship for an opera studio in Leipzig in 2023.
Haizea Muñoz Diez (San Sebastián) began her musical studies with the accordion. She holds a law degree from the University of the Basque Country (2003) and completed her advanced vocal studies at Musikene in 2007, training with Maite Arruabarrena, Ana María Sánchez, and Alejandro Zabala. She furthered her education with teachers such as Ana Luisa Chova, Raquel Andueza, Bonaldo Giaiotti, and Montserrat Caballé. She has taken part in prominent concert series and festivals, performing opera, zarzuela, and recitals with renowned orchestras and conductors. She currently combines her artistic career with teaching.
